Playing at the Border: A Story of Yo-Yo Ma

Renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, performed Bach's cello suites at the border between Texas and Mexico in April 2019. An immigrant to the United States, Yo-Yo Ma was a child prodigy who learned Bach's cello suites when he was only four years old. At the border, he played a song written by a German composer that was nearly forgotten and rediscovered in a second-hand shop in Spain on an instrument made of parts from all over the world. Yo-Yo Ma played at the borders of nations, time, and cultures - and built a bridge.

Playing at the Border: A Story of Yo-Yo Ma weaves together the stories behind the music and moment in a lyrical story of resistance and unity. The powerful symbolism and Theresa Martinez's stunning illustrations create a timely and timeless story that honors immigrants and inspires action.
